“When I moved, I had a self-inflicted budget, which was tricky because I wanted fancy, comfortable pieces that would last a long time. I landed on Crate & Barrel because it has incredible sales all the time, so I could get a luxury sofa, media console, and rug without going over my budget,” Cherner says. Crate & Barrel is like the perfect halfway point between maximalist and minimalist because everything—from the furniture to the accessories—has plenty of personality, but nothing is too overpowering.

Burrow sells plenty of furniture, but it’s most famous for its collection of classic sofas, which, for the most part, are modular, so you can get almost anything and configure it to fit your space. So, if you’re working within a small space, but don’t want to spend your money on something tiny and uncomfortable, Burrow is a great place to start your search for the perfect couch.

Joss & Main is actually owned by Wayfair, but, unlike its parent company, is its own brand and boasts its own specific style. We’d call it California-cool because the palette is generally soft and pale neutrals, with none of the pieces being too fussy or delicate. In other words, there’s a subtle emphasis on a natural backdrop.

“I love Tempaper. I just do. It’s such an incredible brand that is basically made for people who are not crafty, but like doing things themselves,” Cherner explains. “I bought a peel-and-stick wallpaper from Tempaper for my former apartment and loved the process of installing it so much that I bought another wallpaper from the brand and created an accent wall in my bedroom. Both lasted for three-plus years. I ended up having to take it down before moving out. Otherwise, I’d leave it up forever.”

“Parachute is like if your favorite hotel sold its luxury sheets for a fraction of the price. Yes, the brand sells other things, but it’s most beloved, we’d say, for its bedding,” Cherner says. The brand sells percale, flannel, linen, brushed cotton, and more. Plus, as of 2024, Parachute carries a mattress and plush toppers.

Castlery reminds us of Burrow in that it carries a lot of furniture, but most people familiar with the brand knew about the sofas before they knew about the cool coffee tables, bookshelves, and throw pillows. That said, everything from Castlery is cool, comfy, and on trend.

Schoolhouse is one of those brands that you may not have known about until you were redecorating and doing a lot of research, but once you happen upon it, you’ll feel like you need everything. It has kind of a Pacific Northwest look, but the brand is versatile enough to work in any home anywhere. The brand’s whole thing is American-inspired heirloom pieces that don’t cost heirloom prices.

Anyone with an affinity for the midcentury modern era but doesn’t want to spend the sometimes exorbitant prices on authentic pieces from the time, welcome to West Elm. “I didn’t find everything at Crate & Barrel. I couldn’t find nightstands I liked anywhere, so I popped into Pottery Barn just to see if they had anything that tickled my fancy, and I found these nightstands,” Cherner says. “They were already relatively affordable, but they were also on sale, so without even really thinking about it, I bought two and have never looked back. Pottery Barn has so many incredible, albeit quite traditional, furniture and decor that works well with any style.”

Generally speaking, Frontgate is a luxury furniture brand, but because it’s all online and sells thousands of pieces it often needs to offload, there are a lot of sales. We’re not talking a measly 10 percent off here and there. No, we’re talking sometimes thousands of dollars off luxury pieces. Our favorite items to shop, though, are the accessories, like the Mongolian fur decorative pillow covers.

As its name implies, AllModern’s pieces, which range from under $50 accessories to more luxuriously priced furniture, is inspired by the midcentury modern era.
